Overview
Innovel partnered on the Indore Smart Metering Project in Madhya Pradesh to deliver a large scale, technology driven transformation of energy management. The project focused on deploying smart meters, improving billing efficiency, and reducing losses for the utility.
The Challenge
The utility faced multiple operational challenges including high AT&C losses, inefficiencies in billing, and dependency on manual meter readings. There was also a need for real time monitoring and improved network reliability across multiple towns.
The Solution
Innovel implemented an end to end smart metering solution covering design, engineering, procurement, and rollout. The project included deployment of over 3,15,000 smart meters across Indore and surrounding regions.
A centralized control system was established with a Master Control Centre in Indore and satellite centres across towns. Advanced analytics, consumer indexing, and app based field force management enabled seamless execution and monitoring.
Innovel also provided long term advisory services including energy accounting, loss identification, and operational monitoring to ensure sustained performance.
Implementation
The project was executed in phases with a strong focus on quality, speed, and scalability. Field teams were digitized through mobile applications, ensuring accurate installations and real time updates.
Robust network infrastructure and a 24×7 monitoring system ensured uptime beyond SLA requirements. The rollout also included automation of reporting, inventory management, and operational workflows.
The Impact
The project delivered significant improvements across operational and financial metrics. Billing efficiency increased by 10.70 percent, while AT&C losses were reduced by 19.50 percent.
Several towns including Mhow, Khargone, and Ratlam achieved 100 percent smart metering. Physical meter readings were almost eliminated, with negligible manual intervention required.
The network consistently achieved uptime greater than 99 percent, ensuring reliable communication and control. Smart disconnection and reconnection capabilities further improved utility operations.
Conclusion
The Indore Smart Metering Project stands as a benchmark for large scale digital transformation in the utility sector. With a combination of advanced technology, strong execution, and continuous monitoring, Innovel successfully enabled a smarter, more efficient, and future ready energy ecosystem.
